Heavy attack build is definitely the way to go with the two handed nikanas. Hopefully we get a real stance at some point. When it first launched the stance used to be a bit awkward but had crazy damage multipliers, then melee got reworked and it got nerfed. That explains the hate.

Personally, I'd recommend you keep a Berzerker on your Nikana because it really helps a lot with the apparent slowness of the stances, especially Blind Justice's. In case you're making a Nikana, those stances are good across the board, but Blind Justice does the most damage per second by a significant margin (in particular the normal combo). If you're making a Staff, Clashing Forest is the best pick (again in particular for the normal combo).

All stances are great, but I would say if you are more melee focused I would say Blind Justice because - 1) the pause combo is an amazing dash. 2) The block combo is easy and very powerful 3) Without a doubt the easiest stance for nikanas to get. 4) Looks sick af. By selecting a grip, you can make your Zaw into a dagger, machete, polearm, staff, rapier, heavy blade, scythe, sword, hammer or nikana and this will also decide the stance of the Zaw.
